The gap this fills

The sites nobody could alarm properly

A 200-hectare farm. A machinery compound down an unsealed road. A solar farm, a quarry, a set of grain silos, a construction site three months from its first permanent supply. All of them have assets worth six figures and no practical way to run power to a control panel.

Until recently the options were poor. A mains-powered hub in a shed meant trenching, a switchboard and an electrician โ€” often costing more than the alarm. A standalone battery siren gave you noise and nothing else: no monitoring, no verification, no idea whether it was a thief or a kangaroo.

Hub BP Jeweller removes the constraint entirely. It is a full Ajax control panel โ€” same app, same monitoring, same detectors โ€” that simply never expects mains power. Put it behind an LTS Xpand solar module and the site stops having a power problem at all: the panel runs the alarm indefinitely and leaves capacity spare for comms and cameras.

No return visits

A zinc-air battery is excellent until the day it runs out and someone drives two hours to change it. Solar removes the maintenance interval entirely โ€” the site recharges every morning and the hub's internal battery becomes what it should be: a backup, not the plan.

Enormous margin

An Ajax hub is a very light load next to any camera. A single 100 W module with 50 Ah of storage gives so much headroom that a run of overcast days is a non-event, rather than something to calculate nervously.

Room to grow

The same station has capacity left for a 4G router, an IP horn speaker or a camera. A site that starts as an alarm can become alarm plus vision without new infrastructure โ€” the pole and the panel are already there.

Why this beats batteries on most jobs. Battery-only autonomy is a countdown; solar is a steady state. Where a site is genuinely hard to reach the six-year zinc-air option is compelling, but on anything you can drive to, solar costs less over the life of the system and takes the replacement visit off your schedule permanently.

Read 2,000 m honestly. That figure is open space with clear line of sight โ€” a flat paddock, nothing in between. Sheds, silos, tree lines, rising ground and steel structures all cut it, sometimes dramatically. Always verify with Ajax's radio range calculator and a signal test on site before committing to a layout.
ReX extends the map. Where a corner of the property sits outside hub range, a ReX radio extender relays the link. On an off-grid site it runs from its own power supply, so the coverage extends without the site needing mains at that point either.

Or run it on batteries alone

Where a panel isn't practical โ€” deep shade, a covered structure, somewhere a panel would be stolen โ€” the hub runs on batteries alone for years. Figures below are Ajax's published values. Note the two columns: the difference between them is a design decision, not a detail.

The footnote that matters. Ajax's power saver figures assume a system with ten connected devices. A site running thirty detectors, frequent photo verification and regular polling will not achieve six years on a zinc-air battery. Size the power source against the actual device count and expected activity, then add margin.
Batteries are not included. The hub ships without them, so the choice is part of the design. On a solar-powered site the internal battery is simply backup and can be modest; on a battery-only site it is the entire power plan and wants specifying generously. Talk to us before quoting either way.

Before you quote

Site questions

Will it really reach across a farm?

Often, but verify rather than assume. The 2,000 m figure is open space with line of sight. In practice a machinery shed, a stand of trees or a rise in the ground between hub and detector will reduce it considerably. Use Ajax's radio range calculator during design, then confirm with a signal test on site โ€” and plan for a ReX extender where a distant asset is marginal.

What about cellular coverage out there?

This is the constraint people forget. The hub reports over 2G, 3G or LTE, so if there is no usable mobile signal at the hub location there is no path to the monitoring centre. Two SIMs on different carriers helps considerably, and an external antenna on a 3 m cable lets you place the aerial where signal is best. Check coverage at the actual hub position before quoting.

How often will someone need to visit?

That depends entirely on the battery and the load. A zinc-air external battery in power saver mode can go years; a small lead-acid is a couple of months. Remember Ajax's figures assume ten devices โ€” a busy site with thirty detectors and frequent photo verification will consume far more. Where visits are expensive, either specify generously or pair the hub with solar.

Can it do cameras as well?

The hub supports video surveillance with Ajax and third-party devices, and MotionCam detectors give photo verification on alarm. But photo verification and continuous CCTV are different things with very different power budgets. If the site wants recorded video, plan a separate solar-powered camera rather than expecting the alarm's battery to carry it.

Is it monitored like a normal alarm?

Yes. It reports to Ajax PRO Desktop and to central monitoring stations using Ajax's protocols, with addressable devices and photo verification. To the monitoring centre it behaves like any other Ajax system โ€” the difference is purely that the site has no power.

Which version should I order?

The standard hub in its casing suits most installs and includes the tamper and LED. The board-only version is for mounting inside an Ajax Case, supports higher-capacity internal batteries and an external LED and tamper โ€” worth it where you want the electronics in a larger enclosure alongside a bigger battery.

The figures on this page are manufacturer specifications and indicative design guidance. They are not a performance guarantee, a warranty, or a site-specific assessment. Wireless range, battery life and reporting reliability all depend on conditions at the individual site.

In particular, note that:

  • Radio range figures are open-space maximums. Buildings, terrain, vegetation, metal structures and weather all reduce achievable range, often substantially. Range must be verified on site.
  • Battery life figures are published by Ajax for a system with ten connected devices. Device count, polling interval, photo verification frequency, signal conditions and temperature will change consumption significantly.
  • Alarm reporting depends on cellular coverage at the hub location, which is outside our control and can change. Sites with marginal signal require verification and may need an external antenna or an alternative approach.
  • Battery performance varies with temperature and age, and non-rechargeable chemistries behave differently from rechargeable ones in Australian conditions.
  • Batteries are not supplied with the hub and must be selected to suit the installation.
  • Solar performance varies with season, shading, panel orientation, soiling and weather. Solar sizing guidance is indicative only โ€” see the full disclaimer on our solar calculator.
